Chesters
history
|
| When
youve finished shopping and taking in the social scene, hopefully
you will have left enough time to soak in the atmosphere created by
Chesters rich Roman and Medieval history. |

Town Hall

Eastgate Clock
|
| As
you walk into the city center along any of the ancient Roman entry
routes, you cannot miss the famous 13th century Rows - two-tiers of
shops running along the main streets. Two high streets in one, they
take shopping to another level. You'll find nothing like them anywhere
else in the world. |
| The
City Walls will take you to another level too. Built by Roman Legions,
extended by Anglo-Saxons, invaded by Vikings, strengthened by Norman
battle-lords, blasted by Cromwell's cannons, restored by the Victorians
and cherished by all today, they are simply the finest in Britain.
A leisurely stroll along their 2 miles will take you past many of
the City's delights like the enchanting Eastgate Clock and the 1000
year old Cathedral, a haven of reflective tranquillity in a lively,
bustling, cosmopolitan centre. En route you'll come across towers
set against the beckoning background of the Welsh mountains that guarded
the mediaeval Port of Chester, ancient bridges across the River Dee,
19th century canals, elegant Georgian town houses and sights and sounds
from another age....... |
| Wandering
the walls, you will find the City's other great treasures too like
the racecourse once the site of the massive Roman harbour, now staging
the oldest horse races in Britain and the River Dee, where pleasure
boats and swans glide effortlessly past the Edwardian bandstand in
the tree-lined Groves as the band plays on.... |
